Day 11: Feeling the Weight
Listen to Devotional
Transcript
If you’ve ever carried a heavy backpack for a long time, you know how exhausting it can be. At first you might think, I can handle this. But as time goes on, the weight presses down, and every step becomes harder. Financial debt can feel the same way—always there, always pressing, making each financial decision feel heavy. Proverbs 22:7 puts it pretty bluntly with this principle: “The borrower is slave to the lender.”
Debt has a way of limiting, if not dictating, our choices. It causes us stress. It can come with shame and guilt. If you’re currently house-poor, or saddled with student loan debt, or your credit cards are maxed out, you can probably relate.
One of the worst parts about debt is its impact on our ability to be generous. Maybe you want to be more generous. You want to be more giving. You want to say yes when there’s a need, but because of a mountain of debt, there’s barely enough to cover your basic responsibilities. If that’s you, you’re not alone in that. But know that generosity isn’t about how much you give—it’s more about the posture of your heart.
Jesus once said this:
““Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much...””
Sometimes generosity starts with small steps, giving just a little bit or giving in ways that aren’t financial—maybe donating your time or your expertise. In the meantime, getting hyperfocused on eliminating your debts will help you plan for the day when you’ll have the freedom to give more monetarily.
No matter what season you’re in, God wants your heart more than your money. Debt, or anything else, doesn’t have to be your master. You already have a master who cares for you more than you can imagine. And with his help, with wisdom, you can find yourself free from the mastery of debt and with more and more freedom to be generous.
“Heavenly Father,
You know the weight some of us are carrying. Give us wisdom in the steps we need to take toward freedom, and show us ways we can be generous, even now. Amen”
